Touchless vs soft-touch car wash

Short answer: touchless is the safer choice for your paint, soft-touch cleans more thoroughly. For a daily driver in winter, either is fine — as long as the program rinses the underside.

How a touchless wash works

In a touchless (or touch-free) automatic, a gantry or arch moves around the car and sprays a pre-soak, a high-pressure detergent and a rinse. Nothing but liquid touches the paint. Because there is no friction, the chemistry has to do the work: touchless washes use stronger alkaline and acidic soaps, one after the other, to loosen the film of road dirt.

• Good for: new or freshly polished paint, dark colours, ceramic coatings, cars with racks or aftermarket parts.
• Weak spot: the thin, oily "traffic film" often survives. Run a finger over the lower doors afterwards — if it comes away grey, the wash could not quite shift it.

How a soft-touch wash works

Soft-touch (also called friction or soft-cloth) washes add rotating foam or cloth that physically wipes the surface. The contact removes the film a touchless wash leaves behind, so the car comes out cleaner, especially after weeks of slush.

• Good for: very dirty cars, light-coloured paint, anyone who wants the cleanest result from an automatic.
• Weak spot: if the car goes in caked with sand, the material can move grit across the paint. Swirl marks show most on black and dark blue.

What about tunnels?

Most express tunnels are soft-touch: the conveyor pulls the car past several rows of foam and cloth. A few advertise "touch-free" tunnels. If you want no contact at all, look for the word touchless on the sign — or on our listing.

Which one should you choose?

If your car is new, dark or coated, go touchless and accept that a hand wash now and then does the rest. If your car is simply dirty and you want it clean, soft-touch does more. And in salt season, pick whichever is closest and has an undercarriage spray — rust is a bigger enemy than swirls.
